Seniors

Our Senior Division has become highly competitive over the past couple of years, seeing young dynamic anglers coming through the Provincial ranks into their A Teams ready to compete at the highest National level. With the phenomenal growth in numbers over the years, B Nationals is held to ensure all good up-and-coming anglers have opportunity to get into a ranking position should they perform well.

2023 Senior A Nationals

The Senior A Nationals were held in March in the Barkly East area , hosted by SAFFA/ECFFA. The event produced yet another phenomenal catch return overall for a second consecutive year.  The format comprised of five river sectors fished with both dedicated marshals on some sectors, and a buddy-marshalling format on others.

Dan Factor (WP) was on fine form and his many years of top level performance for South Africa showed his experience was hard to match this year, delivering a clean sweep five-session win in his group to take individual Gold. After many consecutive years of dominance by WP Seniors, it was time for the Team trophy to make its way home to another Province with Central Gauteng taking the honours in a very tightly contested team event.

Senior Protea Team 2023

2023 saw our Senior Protea Team head to Slovakia for the Fips-Mouche World Championship. Our selection involves an intense technical trial by invitation based on the national ranking, and a percentage of ranking position is included to form the bases of selection.

The selected team members captained by  Brett van Rensberg(CG), included Shaun Dickson(KZN), Barry Ubsdell(CG) , Devon Isemonger(CG) and Rob Scott(EC) - the latter three being first time anglers at World Championship level. Our team worked hard to finish in a credible15th place overall in a Championship dominated by the top European teams.

Senior B Nationals

It was time to shine on the Cape Streams for our B & C Provincial Team anglers as WPFFA hosted the 2023 B Nationals in late October. Despite recent high water levels on the Elandspad and Smalblaar systems, the rivers had settled nicely and looked really good for the tournament. Even with favorable conditions fish counts were relatively low on the  river sectors. Lakenvlei Dam was expected to be difficult given the discolored water from recent flood conditions around Ceres, however it proved worse than expected as sessions went by ending in a full blank for the anglers in Session 5.

The Cape Winelands team were most at home on the waters winning Team Gold, and Individual Gold for young Le Roux Roos. Team Silver went to KZN B, and Bronze to Western Province C. For full results and pictures of the event visit our facebook page

Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championship 2023

This year the magnificent Isle of Islay, Scotland was the fishing ground and hosting country to the 2023 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championship. Our SASACC Senior Men's team really did us proud both on and off the water. They showed their ability to adapt on the lochs,  which are so very different to home waters in both style and the conditions they faced, fishing off with a very credible 4th position overall in the team standings.  Most proudly they came home with the Friendship trophy,  an award voted for by all the teams entered into the championship - Nicely done fellas !
